Subterranean Termites
About Subterranean Termites
Image
Subterranean termites live in underground colonies or moist, hidden areas above ground, with colonies that can contain up to 2 million members. They build distinctive "mud tubes" to access food sources and protect themselves from open air and predators. These termites are divided into castes—workers, soldiers, and reproductives—each with specific roles.
Worker termites are cream-colored and measure 1/8 to 3/8 inch long. Soldiers are similar in size but have large brown heads and strong mandibles for defense. Reproductives, also known as swarmers, are about one inch long and dark-colored with wings. Subterranean termites are highly destructive and can cause significant structural damage, often before being detected.
