About Silverfish

Silverfish are small, wingless insects named for their silvery, metallic appearance and fish-like shape and movements. Their bodies taper from head to tail and are covered in fine scales that give them a shiny, slippery look. Despite lacking wings, silverfish are capable of running very quickly, which helps them escape predators and remain hidden from humans.

These nocturnal insects prefer dark, damp environments and are commonly found in bathrooms, basements, attics, and kitchens. They feed on a variety of starchy materials, including paper, glue, book bindings, cardboard, wallpaper, and even clothing—especially items containing synthetic fibers or sugars. Because they are secretive and avoid light, silverfish can go undetected for long periods, allowing their damage to accumulate unnoticed. While they do not bite or transmit disease, their presence can be unsettling, and infestations may require persistent cleaning and humidity control to eliminate.
