About House Spiders

The house spider is typically the most frequently encountered spider indoors and is commonly referred to as the common house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum). While generally harmless to humans, it is considered a nuisance pest—primarily due to the unsightly webs it spins rather than any danger posed by the spider itself. These webs are often irregular in shape and found in corners, basements, garages, crawl spaces, and other undisturbed areas of the home.

House spiders are found worldwide and are widespread throughout the United States and Canada. They prefer quiet, sheltered environments where they can build their webs and wait for prey such as flies, mosquitoes, and other small insects. Although they may startle people with their sudden movements, house spiders are actually beneficial in controlling indoor pest populations. They rarely bite, and when they do, their venom is not considered medically significant. Because of their adaptability to indoor environments, they can survive for long periods inside homes with minimal food or water.
